I am a multimedia designer undertaking practice-led research investigating the use of digital media to support independent learning, addressing the problems of professional skills learning and transmission of tacit knowledge.
A central feature of my work is the use of video both as an observational tool and as a means of helping covey tacit / experiential knowledge in creative practices. I also undertake freelance video recording for external projects.
My current work is mostly research-led practice involving a diverse range of multimedia design projects; a new online Design Thinking course for Open University, a combined public exhibition and research event in metalwork & jewellery, and a NHS co-design project.
My earlier practice-led research was with traditional craft practitioners, bringing a designerly approach to the problem of capturing and passing on skilled knowledge. More recently I have been exploring how web 2.0 technologies can support skills learning within a University design studio.
My early design experience was in web site design although nowadays I more frequently use wikis because they support collaborative work. However, video remains my main passion and I love to use youTube as a means of bringing obscure craft skills to wide audiences.
In contrast to my otherwise high-tech profession, I make Scandinavian-style spoons using knives and axes and teach weekend spoon carving courses.
