Design thinking: creativity for the 21st century is a new Open University course starting February 2010. I have been working with the course team as a consultant; authoring content, providing feedback on the use of new software that accompanies the course, and overseeing consistency of content and use of images across the whole course.

Course content

Through a mix of academic and practical work students will develop an understanding of design, acquire new designing skills and build a portfolio of design projects as a foundation for future study. The course looks at common principles of design and ways of thinking that lead to ideas and creative solutions.

As well as having input to elements written by other members of the course team, I have authored several myself. These include early advice to students on how to arrange their workflow, how to work with digital images, observing for design, using storyboards and an assessed unit on game design.

OpenDesignStudio

Interaction with fellow students is very important, so the aim is for them to meet, encourage and help one another within a specially created virtual design studio. Here they will upload their practical work, using images they have created, to discuss with other students and their tutor. They will also be able to see and discuss the design work of other students.

Ongoing research

February-October 2010: I will be working as an Associate Lecturer for Open University tutoring on this course to see how the first intake of students get on with it. In addition I shall be moderating the student forum, so will have chance to observe a wide range of interaction between the students.
